CHICAGO, Sep 03, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Chicago Sun-Times Columnist Mark Brown received a first-place award in the 2009 Illinois Associated Press Editors Association Editorial Excellence contest. The award announcement on September 2, 2009, followed an earlier announcement by the Illinois Associated Press that the Sun-Times News Group, including the Chicago Sun-Times, the city's most-read newspaper, earned a combined 48 awards, including 14 first-place honors, in the 2009 Illinois Associated Press Editors Association Editorial Excellence and the 2009 Illinois Associated Press Editors Association Photo Excellence contests. The Illinois AP honors follow the recent notification made to the Sun-Times News Group that its newspapers will receive more than 100 journalism awards from the Illinois Press Association in a separate contest. Awards for both contests will be presented at the Illinois Press Association/Illinois Associated Press Editors Association annual meeting Oct. 8, 2009 in Peoria, Illinois.

Mr. Brown began writing his four-day-a-week Chicago Sun-Times column in September 2000. Mr. Brown, 54, joined the Sun-Times in 1982 as a general assignment reporter. He spent most of his career covering politics and government and working as an investigative reporter. Brown has been cited by Chicago Magazine as the best news columnist in the city.
